Jaguar E-Type - 1961
The E-Type, produced between 1961 and 1974, is an outstanding model in the history of British sports cars and has become a favourite of collectors. The first models made are held in high esteem, unlike the recently surfaced Chassis No. 60. It was bought second-hand in 1965 by a British naval architect who, after driving it regularly for years, locked it away in a stuffy garage due to the spiralling running costs. The car had done 104,000 km (65,000 miles) by then and the odometer hasn’t changed during the past 30 years.
The neglect the car has been suffering is evident, but almost every part of the 60th model ever made is original. The shock absorbers have been replaced and the canvas top is not factory-made, but the owner has been careful to keep everything from the manual to the log book. He has even kept the original roof.
The car was put up for auction at Bonham, an it was expected to go for around £30,000. It might have been for the remarkable story, maybe the low chassis number but in spite of the considerable cost of restoration it eventually sold for nearly four times the estimate, a staggering £109,020.
The rusty sports car was bought by Classic Motor Cars of Brighton (CMC), which plans to restore the car to exactly the same state in which it left the factory half a century ago. Early E-Types such as this were “Flat floor” types, lacking a dished footwell to give more legroom.
