A howitzer on the loose

A shocking sight on the streets of China

Our heavyweight champion, Balázs, or better known as Assur on the premises is the news writer of the mother site, Oh yes, he’s an automotive engineer too. They say there isn’t a data that has ever escaped his mind, all we know is that he can drop into any conversation about any car that was made after the war, and he’ll be able to add a ton of details you won’t ever be able to find in books. He has been thinking of selling his longserving Volvo for years, so he always has some used car adverts open on his computer, just in case. Has a wife and two (almost grown-up) children.

The self-propelled howitzer probably wandered off from the convoy. Such a huge vehicle wouldn’t run anywhere without police escort.

The Type 05 self-propelled howitzer is quite a shocking sight on the busy road: the armoured monster is twice as wide and three times as high as a larger car. It is surely no everyday sight even in China – vehicles like this run in a convoy under police escort over there under all circumstances.

The pictures are particularly interesting as they show the Type 05, one of the most up-to-date weapons of the People's Liberation Army of China. At least 200 of this model have been in service in the army of the People's Republic of China since 2007. The gun most suitable for long-distance fire support is equipped with a 155 mm cannon, which has a firing range of 50 km and a maximum firing rate of 10 rounds per minute thanks to its automatic charging apparatus. Most of these howitzers are used near the border between China and Russia, which is understandable, as there is a similar arsenal lined up on the Russian side.

The Type 05 is not very quick, its maximum road speed is only 40 km/h, but it is unlikely that anyone would mind – drivers probably feel safer worming behind it than speeding is front of it.
