Our heavyweight champion, Balázs, or better known as Assur on the premises is the news writer of the mother site, totalcar.hu. Oh yes, he’s an automotive engineer too. They say there isn’t a data that has ever escaped his mind, all we know is that he can drop into any conversation about any car that was made after the war, and he’ll be able to add a ton of details you won’t ever be able to find in books. He has been thinking of selling his longserving Volvo for years, so he always has some used car adverts open on his computer, just in case. Has a wife and two (almost grown-up) children.

The fact that a Dacia Duster saved a Porsche Macan doesn't mean that the Duster is a better car. It means the Macan's driver was dumb enough to high-center it.

Porsche’s smaller SUV was launched in Morocco a few days ago. It was at this event that a Macan in trouble was saved by a Dacia Duster. And it wasn’t the lack of off-road capabilities of the former that caused the mishap, but the stupidity of the test-drivers.

Our colleague Zsolt Csikós, who was present at the event, made a few photographs of the incident and gave us the scoop on why the Porsche needed help. The Macan was being test-driven by two British journalists taking turns, and one of them drove the car (able to go off-road but isn’t a true off-roader) somewhere where it got high-centered and the wheels were literally floating on air. Not even the best SUVs manage to escape from such situations by themselves. Thankfully the Duster coming to help, rented by one of the photographers attending the event, managed to get the wheels of the Porsche back on the ground.

The incident sets a good example of how off-road vehicles tempt the drivers to go beyond their depth. If such a car is in bad hands the better its off-road capabilities, the bigger the chance of getting stuck hopelessly.

You’re getting soft with age, too

More comfortable. More extras. Less roof. Softer supension. Sounds bad, if the car is a Porker. But just wait a second...
